A Novena for the Election

Hello to all; just a short post, proposing a form for a Novena in these nine days before the election in the USA.  We are now in the Octave of Christ the King, on the traditional calendar of the Church, so a novena focused on Christ’s royal dignity as head of all states (including ours) seems appropriate.

I assume Trump is the better of the two fates set before us.  But, I don’t presume to tell God His business.  Rather than pray for the victory of whatever side seems best to us, I think it is better simply to entreat God’s forgiveness upon our nation, so that, with His indignation turned away, He may find some capacity on our part to receive whatever gifts or favor He is ready to bestow, for the peaceful and propitious transfer of power in the best interests of our commonweal, and of the whole world.

Below is a proposed form, in Latin and English.  The Psalm can be prayed with your arms out in the form of the cross, or with prostrations between every verse.  I will give music for the antiphons Parce Domine and Sub Tuum Praesidium.   Parce Domine is in tone 1, if you want to chant the psalm in that tone along with it.

Parce Domine, parce populo Tuo; et ne in aeternum irascaris nobis.

Salvum me fac, Domine, quoniam defecit sanctus, quoniam diminutae sunt veritates a filiis hominum. Vana locuti sunt unusquisque ad proximum suum; labia dolosa, in corde et corde locuti sunt. Disperdat Dominus universa labia dolosa, et linguam magniloquam. I hereby renew the promises of my baptism, renouncing Satan and all his works and pomps, and I engage myself henceforth to live a truly Christian life. And in an especial manner do I undertake to bring about the triumph of the rights of God and Thy Church, so far as in me lies. Divine Heart of Jesus, I offer Thee my poor actions in order to obtain the acknowledgement by every heart of Thy sacred, kingly power. In such wise may the kindgdom of Thy peace be established throughout all the earth. Lord, take pity upon our government and upon our people; they that trust in Thee shall not be put to rout; deal with us according to the multitude of Thy mercies.

O Jesu, King and Center of all hearts; by the coming of Thy Kingdom, grant us peace.

Beneath thy guardianship do we fly, Holy Mother of God; despise not the petitions of our extreme need, but rather, deliver us ever from perils all, thou glorious and blessed Virgin.
